Moon Melody hits the airwaves coast to coast
In News on November 13, 2013 at 4:59 pmThis summer was the first for Moon Melody records to spin on campus, community and national radio stations across the country! Cheers to DJ’s and radio programmers for having a good taste in music and giving independent Canadian musicians a shot on the air. Here’s a recap of what went down in 2013:
– Honeybees is the #1 record on the East Coast thanks to CKDU
– People Like Us by Elder Sister Plum lands on the National Folk/Blues chart at #7 in September, #26 on the Top 50!
– The Breaks landed at #5 on Augusts Folk/Blues chart in Exclaim magazine!
– The Other Birds were played Monday to Friday as the feature on 94.9 The Rock Indie at 8!
– The Broadview Band and The Breaks on the same chart from their hometown, Top 10 Folk/Blues
– The Breaks and Elder Sister Plum were spinning on CBC, see this playlist from the Prairies
Our very own records from The Broadview Band, Elder Sister Plum and The Breaks certainly stood up to the test of radio listeners, and in some cases were even exercised on high rotation. We couldn’t be happier about this reception to our basement indie records and look forward to another wave of releases in 2014. Thank you campus and community radio and thank you to CBC.

Songs disguised as demos: ‘Coloured Sketches’
In News on September 22, 2013 at 11:43 pmColoured Sketches is the third installation of Demonstrations from Kaleb Hikele, also known by his birth name The Sun Harmonic.
New songs are available now on a handmade CD- include the standard version (11 songs + a B-Side) when you buy discs from the Moon Melody Suitcase Record Shop.
The practice started in 2011 to capture off-the-floor demos of his unreleased songs- this collection moves from Demonstration #39 forward to #57. While Kaleb Hikele turned his home studio into a sound construction zone, city construction workers made noise outside installing new shingles on the rooftop. Inside of The Townhouse, Kaleb ran through improvisational performances of his latest songs, travelling from the piano to the electric guitar to the acoustic guitar before disarray led to shutting off the microphones at 4:30 a.m. on August 31st. He finished recording the to-do list of 19 tunes in the basement on the afternoon of September 2nd and titled the new batch of music ‘Coloured Sketches’.
Please enjoy his musical expression offered to you and thanks for listening.

Composed of all original songs written over the past seven years, Tanya Semple considers this record to be her musical autobiography. You will hear wistful melancholy ballads followed by groovy toe-tapping tunes, moving into somber and hair-raising stories of sailors lost at sea.
Starting out as solo acoustic folk songs, her music began to take on a life of its own as she explored new instruments in the studio, collaborating with long time friend and musical companion, The Sun Harmonic (Kaleb Hikele).
The two Canadian musicians worked together on the performance and creation of an album that ranges in sound and emotion. Plum was thrilled to have Gary Simkins come by the studio to add some sweetness to four of the songs with his cello, bringing even richer textures to the folky craft.
Recorded in the spring of 2013 at The Townhouse Recording Facility & Sound Studio in Toronto, ‘People Like Us’ will enchant and excite listeners, being both a relatable and escapist experience. Elder Sister Plum would like to thank you for listening to her stories.
